Angel Romero, acclaimed worldwide for his superb mastery of the classical guitar, will perform as special guest soloist with Maestro Eduardo Marturet and the Miami SymphonyOrchestra for the symphony’s 20th Anniversary Season Finale concert series, Friday, May 1 at UM Gusman Hall and Saturday, May 2 at Lincoln Theatre at 8:00 p.m.
“What a thrill it to once again present Angel Romero to Miami audiences as guest artist for the Miami Symphony Orchestra,” says Maestro Marturet, the symphony’s music director and conductor.
“Angel, a music legend and one of the most sought-after musicians of our time, has performed with the Miami Symphony Orchestra almost every season for the past decade. This is the perfect crescendo on which to end our 20th Anniversary season.
”The remarkably talented Mr. Romero has performed in top-tier arts venues throughout the world including those of London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Madrid, Munich, Zurich, Chicago, Los Angles and New York among others, and has soloed with the world’s leading orchestras.
As conductor, he has led numerous orchestras including the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, the Royal Philharmonic, Germany’s NDR Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Symphoniker, the Beijing Philharmonic, the Euro-Asia Philharmonic, the Shanghai Symphony, the Bogotá Philharmonic, the Chicago Sinfonietta, the Orquesta de Baja California, the Santa Barbara Symphony, the San Diego Symphony and the San Diego Chamber Orchestra among others.
“The Miami Symphony Orchestra has selected Angel to showcase a beautiful classical guitar composition by Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo, Concierto de Aranjuez,” says, Maestro Marturet pointing to Romero’s many musical accomplishments.
In 2000, Romero—a native of Malaga, Spain-- was presented the Grand Cross of Isabel la Catolica, the highest honor Spain can confer, and was knighted Sir Angel Romero.
In 2007, he was honored by the RecordingAcademy, producer of the Grammy Awards, with the Recording Academy President’s Merit Award. In addition to Angel Romeo as guest artist, Maestro Marturet is ending the symphony’s celebratory 20th Anniversary season with Rossini’s classically Italian “Barber of Seville Overture”; and Planets by Gustav Holst, a suite of seven movements that ranges from lyrical to lush, thunderous to ethereal.
“This beautiful program is designed to show appreciation for the audiences that have supported us this season, and for the past two decades, and to create anticipation for Miami Symphony Orchestra seasons to come.
”In addition, Angel Romero and the Miami Symphony Orchestra will present a special concert in the courtyard of the Biltmore Hotel at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 3.Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with Romero as soloist is the centerpiece for a delightful program that includes Hahn’s Mozart Overture and Ibert’s Divertissement.
