Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in Palm Beach schools on April 26
Date:04-26-2010
Time: 9am

The España-Florida Foundation 500 Years has launched an initiative that will bring Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés – played by actor Chaz Mena – to numerous Florida schools.

The first performance – “Menéndez: Claiming Florida” – will take place in Palm Beach County; the Okeeheelee Middle School, New Horizons Elementary School and Berkshire Elementary School will be the first to be privileged with the explorer’s presence.

The year is 1567: Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, Spanish Navy admiral, Florida’s first governor and founder of St. Augustine, returns to his home in Asturias two years after founding St. Augustine, the oldest city in the United States. The children will spend some time with Don Pedro at his home in Avilés and then witness a reenactment of his exploits in the New World in an interactive, dynamic and educational performance.

American Chaz Mena is a renowned stage actor who has also appeared in movies and TV series such as “Law & Order” and “Miami Vice.”
