Borobia, a ranching, mining and proud town

The Villa of Borobia, where Tristán de Luna Arellano was born is located adjacent to the Sierra del Moncayo, in the easternmost province of Soria, which is the Autonomous Community of Castilla y Leon, on the border with Aragon.

Borobia history is fundamentally linked to the exploitation of iron, the performance of livestock and its stratigacally military location. Its origins are very old, and refers to the time Celtiberian because it is one of the five or six Celtiberian cities that minted coins in this area in the second century.

During the Middle Ages it remained in the Arab hands shortly (this region was barely Arabized) since the early tenth century when it was taken by the King of Pamplona, Garcés Sancho who established a stronghold in the southernmost part plus he gave certain range by giving it jurisdiction.

Later, in course of the wars of Raya (siglos XIII-XV) Borobia changed hands several times between the three kingdoms it borders: Navarre, Aragon and Castile, and finally lost importance and was converted to a village. In the mid-fifteenth century, it regained itstitle of villa  under the Lordship of the family and Luna Arellano, Mariscal de Castilla.

Borobia and its surroundings are steeped in history, characters, battles and legends. In fact, Araviana not only had one but three battles during the Middle Ages. Another legend tells how the troops were ambushed by Almanzor Seven Infantes of Lara, who murdered and severed heads to free his father,  who was imprisoned in Cordoba.

In terms of population, Borobia has had about thousands souls along the modern age, surpassing that figure in the sixties of the twentieth century. But since then the mass emigration of its population has become an outstanding drama that has left this historic village with only 300 inhabitants at present, on the brink of extinction.

It should be noted that currently Borobia has another thing to see: the remains of the ancient castle which saw the birth of Tristan de Luna still stands today. The Astronomical Observatory "El Castillo", the first astronomical observatory is open to the Spanish public.

The family of Tristan de Luna in Borobia

Borobia and Ciria became property of the Luna family in 1437, after being recovered by the hands of Aragon Castilla. Carlos Arellano, was the grandfather of Tristan de Luna,  and carnal uncle of another famous person: Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordoba, the Great Captain, son of his sister Leonor Arellano.

The father of Tristan de Luna and II Mariscal Castilla was Luna and Carlos Arellano,  and one of his legitimate children born of his second wife, Ms Juana Avalos (Commander Guevara's daughter), became Tristan de Luna Arellano.

But the Mariscalato passed to his brother Charles (the first son of the first wife of "caste", Catalina Torres) and Tristan had to go to America to seek their fortunes, though well supported by his uncle, D. Juan de Velasco, viceroy of New Spain, and his cousin Ms. Juana de Zúñiga, the wife of Hernán Cortés.

Tristan de Luna was responsible for directing the issuance of exploration and conquest of Florida, one of the greatest of his era, but due to the difficulty of the undertaking at the same fell into disgrace and was removed. However, he founded Santa Maria in Pensacola and now holds the title of the first governor of Florida.
